The Human Rights Council is an intergovernmental body within the United Nations system responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe and for addressing situations of human rights violations and making recommendations on them. The Human Rights Council is the main intergovernmental body within the United Nations responsible for human rights. Established in 2006 by the General Assembly, it is responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe. The Council, composed of 47 Member States, provides a multilateral forum to address human rights violations and country situations.
At periodic sessions, it adopts resolutions or decisions expressing the will of the international community on specific human rights issues or situations. While protecting the right to protest and freedom of the press are among the UNHRC's objectives, it also aims to assist those whose rights have been violated and to provide a civil foundation for individuals who wish to exercise their right to protest. UN officials and appointed experts serve as an international forum for dialogue on human rights issues with states, civil society, and other participants. It examines the attitudes of member states in addressing political arrests in authoritarian regimes.
