The United Nations Security Council, which is charged with maintaining international peace and security now finds itself concentrated on one of the most contested and strategically important maritime regions in the world: the South China Sea. Increased militarization, overlapping territorial claims and heightened strategic rivalry increase the probability of conflict, so the United Nations Security Council seeks to convene to discuss the future of maritime sovereignty, freedom of navigation, and regional cooperation amidst heightened military tensions.
